The Blue Light of Snow
17th November 2023
I am endlessly fascinated by how different artists capture light. It’s always changing, highlighting different aspects of life for us to appreciate, effecting our moods or just giving us a new perspective. Today it was the work of artist and illustrator Matthew Gagnon that caught my eye. His street scenes explore light beautifully, especially when affected by snow.
The Canadian artist has a fascination with light, and his home town of Montreal. Abandoned corners, architectural moments and the most beautiful shadows abound in his work.
I like how you can see the progression of Gagnon’s work as well, from a looser paint style to this more graphic and refined pen-drawn compositions. His work is bolder now, and the colours are reduced and more assertive. Love it. We don’t get many snow days here in Cornwall but to me he captures the feeling of that light perfectly.
