Unusually Elegant Concrete
30th January 2018
Concrete can be brutal, cold and towering as well as smooth and beautiful, but rarely elegant. With the invention of Concrete Canvas, a concrete cloth, a whole new realm of possibilities has opened up. Artist Neal Aronowitz pushes this new product to its limits in his furniture collection. ‘Whorl Table’, ‘Whorl Console’, ‘Todos Table’ and ‘Enso Table’ were inspired by the brush strokes of Japanese ink painting.
To create this level of fluidity wasn’t easy, cumbersome wooden moulds needed to be made. The end result though challenges our view of concrete, something so slight shouldn’t be sturdy. The furniture seems to defy gravity and lends a softness to the minimalist aesthetic.
