Renault’s R17 Retro-Futuristic Update

20th September 2024

Today we are enjoying Renault’s collaboration with designer Ora Ïto, a concept electric car inspired by the classic R17 Coupe. There is a definite connection to much loved coupe, the French designer refers to his style as ‘simplexity’ the language of making complex design simple which suits this retro-futuristic car perfectly.

It’s very sleek, and feels substantial. Definitely getting movie vibes! The yellow lights especially give it an almost Bladerunner feel.

It was a team effort though with the French designer teaming up with Sandeep Bhambra and Giles Vidal from Renault. The interior also has a lovely feel, with the intention of a more lounge-like atmosphere, rather than your standard car. Ïto says when he saw the original car he felt there was something of a shark about it, and that is what he kept in mind during the design process. A happy shark mind you.

Ïlo focused a lot on the proportions, making sure the balance was right. Electric cars are bigger, heavier, and the car needed not to loose its initial vibe.

These design collaborations serve to inspire future models and help the car industry stay open to new possibilities. I do love the amount of consideration that goes into something like this. Form, function, fun.
