Using up Waste Plastic with Beautiful Design
9th November 2018
Kevin Murphy is a high-end hair care brand that sees their products as ‘skincare for the hair’, but this company has an eco conscience which meant packaging was a real challenge! We are seeing more and more plastic free solutions, shampoo bars for example, but I quite like this take too.
With 300 million tons of plastic being produced each year, and 18 million of that ending up in the ocean, things need to change. Collaborating with Pack Tech, a Danish packaging company with green ideas, they found a way to convert the oceans waste plastic into beautiful square bottles. Pack Tech collect around 360 tons of plastic from the ocean with trawlers (fishing boats). Next the plastic is cleaned, melted and turned into granules which are made into these distinct bottles.
This process is actually 5 times more costly than virgin plastic, but the company wanted to make that commitment. With each Kevin Murphy product sold about 45g of plastic is removed from the ocean. Sounds a good idea to me! Beautiful design that actually cleans our oceans.
